A historic event took place at the Mason County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday. For the first time in the history of the Sheriff’s Office, the rank of Corporal was enacted. Four Deputies were promoted to this new rank, bringing the Mason County Sheriff’s Office chain of command in line with many other pro-active Law Enforcement agencies throughout the USA. According to Sheriff Casey Salisbury, due to the extensive coverage of Law Enforcement needed for protecting the citizens of Mason County, this first line supervision rank provides an additional layer of management/supervision for the front line Patrol Deputies. In addition, another Deputy was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in order to complete the supervisory coverage needed for all shifts. The Sheriff says since he is working on a dwindling budget, all of the promotions came from currently working Deputies and that none of the promotions are new manpower or new hire positions. Sergeant Bill Philpott is the newly promoted Sergeant. The newly promoted Corporals are Corporal Michael Sargent, Corporal Bill Reed, Corporal Mike Western and Corporal Tim Ripp. After the promotion ceremony, the Sheriff’s Office uniformed command staff drove to the Capital Medical Center and performed the promotion ceremony in the hospital room of Corporal Bill Reed, who had just undergone knee surgery.
