Two cars driving at high speeds crashed early Friday morning near the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton.

According to the Washington State Patrol, both cars were westbound on State Route 102 (Dayton Airport Road) about 12:30 AM. The 44-year-old Shelton woman driving the first car lost control due to “excessive speed” and the vehicle went off the roadway near milepost 0. The car then struck several trees and came to rest on its top. The second car was at an “extremely high rate” and the 27-year-old Inchelium man driving swerved to avoid colliding with the first vehicle. He also lost control of his car and struck a tree. The highway was fully closed for approximately six hours.

The Shelton woman was transported to Mason General Hospital in Shelton by private vehicle. She was then transported by aid car to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma.

A press memo from the State Patrol says the Inchelium man was injured but does not include information as to treatment or whether he was taken to a hospital.

The memo does indicate that drugs or alcohol were involved and list the cause of the crash as “reckless driving”. As for charges, authorities marked “pending” next to each driver. Both vehicles involved were totaled.
