This past holiday weekend was busy for emergency crews in Mason County. From a rescue at the High Steel Bridge to a drive by shooting in the Pickering area. Here are summaries of some of the incidents:

A 19-year-old male fell approximately 400 feet down the side of the canyon at the High Steel Bridge Saturday. Mason County’s Special Operations Rescue Team (SORT) was able to hoist the man to safety.

SORT is consists of specially trained members from West Mason Fire, Mason County Fire District 6 (Union), and the Mason County Sheriff’s Office. Reportedly, the man attempted to walk down a washout thinking it was a trail and slipped.


At approximately 3 AM Sunday, Mason County Sheriff’s deputies patrolling the Pickering park-and-ride area heard several gunshots. Deputies observed a gray colored vehicle driving slowly on Pickering and attempted to catch up with the vehicle, which then left the area. Returning to the location of the gunfire, deputies found several bullet casings on the roadway. The vehicle was later located at a residence on E. Phillips Lake Loop Road.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team executed a search warrant at the residence. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and has been booked on charges of Assault 1st and Drive-By Shooting.
